Australian consumers must pay a 10% goods and services tax on all online goods bought from overseas
From 1st July 2018, Australian consumers must pay a 10% goods and services tax on all online goods bought from overseas, bringing online purchases inline with tax requirements on goods and services purchased in Australia.
All goods and services, including digital products and services, will now subject to GST. Previously, imported goods worth less than $1,000 were GST-free.
Along with clothing, books, electronics, sporting equipment etc., GST must be collected on intangible supplies, including but not limited to music downloads (e.g. from Apple iTunes), movie streaming services (e.g. Netflix), software subscriptions (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite) and online services (e.g. premium access to Dropbox).
